Why Movement is Important? 5 Tips to Upgrade your Daily Movement

Updated: May 30, 2023

Our bodies are designed to move. We are made to walk at the park, climb a tree, bend forward and squat to sit. Moving allows good circulation of the body from joints to stronger bones and muscles and improve skills such as reflex reactivity, good coordination, cardiovascular circulation, improved learning skills and concentration.

Without movement our body would deteriorate. Some countries like Canada and Australia declared excessive sitting "dangerous" as it would lead to heart disease and other conditions such as back pain, obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer and depression. Singapore has been promoting walking 10,000 steps a day which is similar to walking about 4-5m per day depending on your stride to improve blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attack and clears your mind for mental health.

If you're the type who enjoys lounging- we hope to motivate you to start moving ☺️

There's huge benefits of physical movement:

1- its the easiest way to improve your mental and physical health

Your brain informs your nervous system to tell your muscles to move. Moving every day has the power to improve every part of your body. And it’s not just about high-impact, sweat-induced exercise, either. Keep it simple to start.

be independent and move freely with confidence and without anxiety

2- Increase independence

If you feel confident, you can do your daily activities without the fear of falling, try out a variety of activities or even traveling to exotic destinations. Empowering yourself to move freely without anxiety and the feeling of being a burden to someone.

3- Increase energy and reduce fatigue

Moving increases endorphins, making you feel be alive and energised. We understand that

there are just days that you feel “Oh so tired” and that’s fine. But find another day of the week to book a class. Planning your week and consistency is key!

For those who are movement specialist, kudos to you! You're probably enjoying your routine and would love to take it up a notch!

1. Stretch and mobility - this is usually neglected as it takes extra time and effort apart from your activity. It is however a must, especially if you do high intensity and high impact activities or sports. This resets your body to to be ready for the next round and prevents injuries. This can be in a form of stretch and mobility classes like yoga, myofascial release, sports massage or therapy or even finding a physiotherapist or osteopath to have a look at your physique.

2. Variate your workout - Shake up your routine by trying new activities, sports or a different workout. Once your body adapted the exercise would feel easier. The goal is then to challenge your physique. This may mean you train longer, harder or variate your workout.

3. Functional training - like all athletes, your need a trainer to ensure your fundamentals are technically sound with the basics, fine tune movements or even advance your training. Example would be re-calibrating basic movements such as lunges and squats and adding on either strength, intensity, balance or even speed. You can also do Pilates as it's naturally a functional movement that uses core strength as an anchor to execute the exercise.
